Music Production

Our Music Production course is designed to introduce children to a wide range of creative and technical skills through engaging, relevant topics. The course covers core music production techniques—such as arranging, layering, sampling, remixing, and composition—while also connecting to broader creative interests. This approach not only nurtures musical ability but also develops valuable life skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and digital literacy.

In today’s digital world, children have access to powerful tools that allow them to bring their creative ideas to life. Our course equips them with the skills and inspiration to explore music production in an exciting and practical way. Students work with digital audio workstations (DAWs), MIDI keyboards, and audio manipulation tools to produce original music and sound design.

What We Cover

Each term, students explore a range of hands-on projects that introduce them to key concepts in music production:

  • Pop Songs & Album Artwork – Students create their own pop songs using loops while learning about bars, beats, structure, and drum machines. To complete the project, they design original album artwork using digital design software.

  • Remixing & Sampling – Using Christmas songs as a starting point, students explore MIDI editing, quantisation, importing/exporting stems, and arrangement skills. They play melodies using MIDI keyboards and reimagine them in different genres.

  • Superhero Soundtracks – Students invent their own superheroes and compose theme music to match their powers. This module introduces vocal manipulation techniques, such as robotic and alien voice effects, and teaches them to create custom loops using smart instruments.

  • Soundscapes & Emotion in Music – A deep dive into original composition, where students recreate an emotion through music or compose for nature footage. This module encourages experimentation with dissonance, creative instrumentation, and takes a further look at MIDI editing and sample pads.

  • Music for Film – Students compose music for an action film scene, using high-energy compositions and adding sound effects for vehicles, crashes, and crowd noise. This module introduces basic sampling and working with time markers in a DAW.

  • Music for Games – Our most ambitious project, this module introduces students to basic coding as they create two levels of a video game from scratch. They compose thematic music and sound effects, tailoring their compositions to their game’s unique style—whether it’s a space adventure, a fantasy quest, or an intense boss fight.

    Project Sharing

While this course doesn’t culminate in a live performance like our other ensembles, completed projects are shared with parents via a termly webpage. Additionally, students have opportunities to collaborate remotely with their peers by using browser-based software from the comfort of their homes between sessions.
