Autumn Showcase

Welcome to the third showcase for music production projects! Unlike our traditional ensembles, music production doesn't culminate in a live performance. Instead, it's best shared digitally.

Each half-term will feature a specific theme, delving into new aspects of music production while reinforcing previously learned skills.

About the modules

We recently invested in MIDI keyboards, giving students the ability to record into digital audio workstations using physical keys for the first time. With a longer half-term than usual, we completed two projects, both centered around creating music with a purpose.

The first task was for students to invent a podcast based on their interests. They then composed short 'intro music' pieces for their podcasts, incorporating elements that hinted at the podcast’s theme—for instance, a gaming podcast might include 8-bit samples to evoke a retro arcade vibe. These compositions were paired with custom-designed podcast album covers.

The second project, which took place over October, revolved around the theme of Halloween. This gave students the opportunity to explore the more emotive aspects of musical composition, focusing less on structured rhythms and more on dissonance, atmosphere, and creative instrumentation. Using MIDI keyboards, students reimagined the audio for the opening titles of The Nightmare Before Christmas.
